How your donation of food is distributed for emergencies

On Tuesdays and Thursdays of each week, the food pantry is open for Emergency distribution for referrals from the local human service agencies during office hours, and to support families who participate in the GRACE budgeting program. Recipients are screened according to need by the referring agencies and again by The Pantry. Some referrals may not meet USDA or food stamp eligibility guidelines, but have a serious need. Food is distributed from available supply of donated food, supplemented by purchased food as necessary.

How your donation is distributed on a supplemental basis

On the third Wednesday night of each month (because that is the week most families request food), the Pantry is open from 4-6 for supplemental food distribution. Recipients are pre-screened by referring agencies and again by The Pantry. Food is distributed STRICTLY according to USDA income guidelines. Food is bagged and distributed in units of 3 (single unit 1-3, double unit 4-6, triple unit 7+). Currently the food pantry is distributing from its available supply to each family/unit of three: 25-30 lbs. of nutritiously balanced non-perishables plus around 6 lbs of frozen meats, and depending on the availability of donated food, recipients are given a "GRAB BAG" and invited to "shop" from a table of assorted donated foods.

Additional Facts

The Food Pantry is a member of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Through this membership it receives free USDA surplus commodities, donated foods available. The Food Pantry Encourages Participation from anywhere in the network such as grocery stores with shared maintenance fees added at 15 cents per pound for non-perishables, and 18 cents per pound for frozen meats, and when neither of these are available, certain commodities may be purchased at distributor price to fill out the nutritious USDA menu.

According to BRAFB, a $1 donated to a network food pantry will purchase up to 10 pounds of food. Last year The Food Pantry received, by donation or purchase, 45,572 pounds of food which was distributed to 2116 individuals in 883 Greene County families. This included 60 elderly, hospice or disabled families who depended on this distribution each month, some for many years. Other families are usually fed from one to six months until their circumstances change.

Please help feed these families who are agonizingly requesting assistance for the first time in their lives!
